The VIIRS/SNPP Deep Blue Aerosol L2 6-Min Swath 6 km product from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) uses the Deep Blue (DB) algorithm over land and Satellite Ocean Aerosol Retrieval (SOAR) algorithm over water to determine atmospheric aerosol loading for daytime cloud-free snow-free scenes. This data product is designed to facilitate continuity in the aerosol record provided by the Deep Blue aerosol project for other sensors including the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and Terra/Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS). The VIIRS Deep Blue aerosol product is a Level-2 product generated at 6 km (at nadir) spatial resolution. DB and SOAR use combinations of VIIRS's reflective solar bands to provide information about the loading and size/type of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Radiometrically-accurate radiances are required, as are cloud-free snow-free daytime scenes, thus gaps in the aerosol data will appear wherever these conditions are not met.
