  • Abstract
    The SLSTR Skin Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the mission primary products from the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) instrument on board Sentinel-3. The SENTINEL-3 mission is jointly operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT to deliver operational ocean and land observation services and provides data continuity for the ERS, ENVISAT and SPOT satellites. Its orbit is sun-synchronous at 814.5 km altitude (14 + 7/27 revolutions per day, 385 orbits per cycle) with a local equatorial crossing time of 10:00 am and provides a 27-day repeat. The two in-orbit SENTINEL-3 satellites are formed a constellation with a 180 deg in-plane separation between the two spacecraft. SENTINEL-3B's orbit is identical to SENTINEL-3A's orbit but flies +/-140 deg out of phase with SENTINEL-3A. The SLSTR instrument is a conical scanning imaging radiometer employing the along track scanning dual-view technique to provide robust atmospheric correction over a dual-view swath. The width of the nominal image swath is 1 400 km for the nadir view, and 740 km for the along track view. It provides data continuity back to 1991 as its data permit the continuation of data-sets from previous instruments: ATSR on ERS-1, ATSR-2 on ERS-2 and AATSR on Envisat. The SLSTR design incorporates the basic functionality of AATSR, with the addition of some new, more advanced, features. One SLSTR Level-2 product provides SST following the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) data processing specification. As a consequence, SST is given as a single field, derived from the best performing single-coefficient SST field in any given part of the swath.
