Abstract
TOAST is a new near real-time operational ozone map generated by combining TOVS tropospheric and lower stratospheric (4 to 23 km) ozone retrievals with SBUV/2 spatially smoothed mid-to-upper stratospheric (24 to 54 km) layer ozone retrievals. Ozone distribution in mid-to-upper stratosphere does not exhibit fine-scale features and can be smoothly interpolated to TOVS spatial resolution. TOAST then simply combines TOVS lower stratospheric ozone with spatially smoothed SBUV/2 mid-to-upper stratospheric ozone to give a new total column ozone map product. In essence, we are replacing TOVS climatology with real-time SBUV/2 measurements in the mid-to-upper stratosphere (the TOAST - TOVS map shows that information). Although TOAST improves the accuracy of TOVS total ozone by bringing in SBUV/2 information above 24 km, it cannot compensate for missing information in TOVS 20 to 23 km. This happens when TOVS sensitivity goes down to 20 km from 23 km during mid-stratospheric warming events. TOAST cannot also fix completely contamination of TOVS data with high altitude thin cirrus clouds. We are working on a different method to correct for cirrus cloud problem Data set information: http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/sci_team/ -
