    <skos:definition xml:lang="en">The AVHRR five channel scanning radiometer with 1.1-kmresolution is sensitive in the visible and near-infrared, and theinfrared &apos;window&apos; regions.  This instrument will be carriedthrough NOAA-J, NOAA-K, L and M and will have a similarinstrument with six channels and other improvements.  AVHRR dataare tape-recorded onboard the spacecraft for readout at theFairbanks and Wallops Command Data Acquisition stations.  Thesedata can be recorded in 1.1-km resolution (the basic resolutionof the AVHRR instrument) or at 4 km resolution; the swath widthis &gt;2600 km. The stored high resolution (1.1-km) imagery is knownas Local Area Coverage (LAC).  Owing to the large number of databits, only about 11+ minutes of LAC can be accommodated on asingle recorder.
