<skos:definition xml:lang="en">The Meteorological Institute of Hamburg University was originally founded in1929 and - after the break of world war two - exists as separate unit againsince 1962. It is active in the fields of physics of the atmosphere in thewidest sense and figures among the largest institutes in Germany for theeducation of students of meteorology. The Institute has taken an active part in founding the Centre for Marine andClimate Research (ZMK) at Hamburg University, of which it is a member since1989. ZMK is part of a larger unit, the Centre for Marine and AtmosphericResearch (ZMAW), which will also comprise the Max-Planck-Institute forMeteorology (MPI-M). The Meteorological Institute maintains close relationshipto the MPI-M which is documented by joint personnel, joint scientific projects, joint technical departments such as labs, a mechanical workshop and a jointlibrary, and by sharing rooms in the same building. Moreover, special relationsexist with the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht, since one of their directors is,simultaneously, full professor at the Meteorological Institute of HamburgUniversity. Clearly, the science of meteorology, but also the students ofmeteorology, significantly benefit from this highly interactive network.
