The Institute is the Norwegianauthorities' consultant and supplier of knowledge, andcontributes to the best possible administration of Norwegianpolar areas. Through active participation in national andinternational bodies, the Polar Institute is central when itcomes to protecting national interests in matters of researchand the environment.The Institute?s activities are concentrated on environmentalmanagement needs at both poles. Global climate, long-rangetransported pollution, the effect of pollutants on theenvironment, biodiversity and topographical mapping of theregions are all-important tasks, as is environmentalcollaboration in the Barents Region. The Institute equips andorganizes expeditions to both poles, owns the research vessel'Lance' and runs the Norwegian research station at Ny-?lesund,which received EU status as a large-scale research facility in1997.The Norwegian Polar Institute distributes the results ofresearch projects and environmental management projects to theNorwegian administration and to interested scientists andmanagers as well as providing information to thepublic.
