The Argos program is administered under a jointagreement between the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA) and the French space agency, CentreNational dýEtudes Spatiales (CNES).The system consists of in-situ data collection platformsequipped with sensors and transmitters and the Argos instrumentaboard the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational EnvironmentalSatellites (POES). The global environmental data sets arecollected at telemetry ground stations in Fairbanks, Alaska;Wallops Island, Virginia; and Lannion, France; and pre-processedby the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and InformationService (NESDIS) in Suitland Maryland.Worldwide coverage is provided by this system. Additionally,incorporating the Argos instrument on a moving satellite allowsfor locating an in-situ platform using Doppler shiftcalculations.
