<skos:definition xml:lang="en">The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) isdedicated to increasing knowledge of the biological and physicalprocesses that sustain life on earth. SERC's interdisciplinaryresearch applies long-term studies to examine the ecologicalquestions about landscapes of linked ecosystems, especiallythose impacted by human activities. SERC scientists use anexperimental approach to discover mechanisms regulating thestructure and dynamics of the environment.Located on the shore of Chesapeake Bay, SERC uses the geographicfeatures of the nation's largest estuary to investigateinterconnections of aquatic, terrestrial and atmosphericcomponents of complex landscapes. These studies are thencompared on regional, continental and global scales. SERCdevelops innovative approaches and instrumentation to measureenvironmental change in four ecological levels: global change;landscape ecology; ecology of coastal ecosystems; and populationand community ecology. For improved stewardship of the biosphere, SERC's researchprovides data, publications and expert consultation in supportof conservation, environmental policy and management of naturalresources. Connected to an international network ofcollaborators, SERC trains future generations of scientists toaddress ecological questions of the nation and globe. SERC'seducation programs in ecology demonstrate to the public theactive process of research, and infuse scientific approaches forenvironmental issues through experiencing nature.Website: 'http://www.serc.si.edu/'[Summary provided by the SERC.]</skos:definition>
