The ESI scores are based upon a set of 20 core'indicators,' each of which combines two to eight variables for atotal of 68 underlying variables. The ESI permits cross-nationalcomparisons of environmental progress in a systematic andquantitative fashion. It represents a first step towards a moreanalytically driven approach to environmental decisionmaking.The documents made available here provide in-depth details on theanalytical framework, quantitative methodology, and data sourcesthat underlie the ESI .
