Sponsored by the Minerals Management Service(MMS) of the Department of the Interior, LATEX is the largest shelfphysical oceanography research project yet undertaken. MMS managesfederal mineral resources on the continental shelf. To meet theirenvironmental and managerial responsibilities, the Service needs tounderstand physical processes and circulation on the shelf and howthey may affect the stability of structures and the transport ofpollutants. In addition, shelf circulation data will be used in MMS'soil spill risk analysis models.
