Manywater utilities monitor TOC to determine raw water quality or toevaluate the effectiveness of processes designed to removeorganic carbon. Some wastewater utilities also employ TOCanalysis to monitor the efficiency of the treatment process. Inaddition to these uses for TOC monitoring, measuring changes inTOC concentrations can be an effective 'surrogate' for detectingcontamination from organic compounds (e.g. petrochemicals,solvents, pesticides).
