<skos:definition xml:lang="en">The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) was established in1980, under the joint sponsorship of International Council forScience (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),and has also been sponsored by the IntergovernmentalOceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO since 1993.The objectives of the programme are to develop the fundamentalscientific understanding of the physical climate system andclimate processes needed to determine to what extent climate canbe predicted and the extent of human influence on climate. Theprogramme encompasses studies of the global atmosphere, oceans, sea and land ice, and the land surface which together constitutethe Earth's physical climate system. WCRP studies arespecifically directed to provide scientifically foundedquantitative answers to the questions being raised on climateand the range of natural climate variability, as well as toestablish the basis for predictions of global and regionalclimatic variations and of changes in the frequency and severityof extreme events.Contact Information:WCRP Joint Planning Staffc/o World Meteorological Organization7 bis, Avenue de la PaixCase Postale 23001211 Geneva 2, SwitzerlandTel: +41 22 730 81 11Fax: +41 22 730 80 36email: dwcrp&#64gateway.wmo.chWebsite: 'http://www.wmo.ch/web/wcrp/wcrp-home.html'[Summary provided by WCRP]</skos:definition>
