    <skos:definition xml:lang="en">Airborne and Remote sensing Multi Air Pollutant Surveys (AiRMAPS) is a multi‑year NOAA‑led observing program, with NASA as a key partner, that uses coordinated aircraft, ground, and satellite observations to quantify emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants and to evaluate space‑based remote sensing methods over U.S. oil‑and‑gas and urban regions. The first AiRMAPS deployment happened in summer 2024 and will continue until 2026. AiRMAPS is led by NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) and NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), with major collaboration from NASA, especially through joint air‑quality field campaigns and shared aircraft and instrument assets. Additional partners include universities and regional stakeholders engaged in specific deployments such as the 2025 Baltimore Air Quality and Marcellus Survey (BAQMS) component, which links AiRMAPS with NASA’s mid‑Atlantic air‑quality activities. In situ aircraft measurements provide high‑frequency observations of methane, NO2, ozone, other reactive gases, aerosols, and meteorology across urban plumes and oil‑and‑gas fields, suitable for top‑down emissions estimation and process studies. Remote‑sensing data from aircraft and satellites include column and imaging products for methane and NO2 and related pollutants, integrated with surface monitoring networks into a tiered observing system to characterize emissions and transport over multiple spatial and temporal scales. AirMAPS data can improve and evaluate bottom‑up emission inventories and long‑term monitoring approaches for greenhouse gases and air pollutants, reducing uncertainty for regulatory and scientific assessments. It can also validate and refine retrievals from current and future satellites (including commercial methane and NO2 sensors), support state and regional air‑quality management, and inform policies and mitigation actions related to urban air quality and oil‑and‑gas sector emissions.</skos:definition>
