<skos:definition xml:lang="en">On April 1, 2001, the National Institute of Advanced IndustrialScience and Technology (the new AIST) began operations. The AISTis a newborn research organization that comprises 15 researchinstitutes previously under the former Agency of IndustrialScience and Technology (the former AIST) in the Ministry ofInternational Trade and Industry and the Weights and MeasuresTraining Institute.AIST shall carry out activities regarding: (1) research anddevelopment on industrial science and technology, (2) geologicalsurvey, (3) measurement standards, and (4) technologicalapplications for the private sector.Specifically, AIST strives to publish achievements by thecommunication of technological information and conduct researchand development respecting three missions as follows:(a) Establish measurement standards, carry out geologicalsurveys, and perform research and development of fundamentaltechnology that requires a high degree of neutrality andreliability to establish a national techno-infrastructure.(b) Research and development in fields such as energy and theenvironment involve long lead times and require that a highdegree of risk be born before industrial application ispossible. Therefore the government has made AIST responsible forsolving technological problems in these fields.(c) Promote interdisciplinary research, which is necessary forthe improvement of research and development and to encouragecompetition in industry. In carrying out the above missions, AIST encourages the freeexchange of information among research communities to fosterintellectual creativity. AIST unites the research potentials ofuniversities, the private sector, and government agencies withthe aim of producing world-class results. At the same time, itcontributes to the intellectual wealth of the nation and, moreover, to that of humankind through positive activities inestablishing technological standards.Website: 'http://www.aist.go.jp/'[Summary provided by AIST.]</skos:definition>
