The other UMCES laboratories are the ChesapeakeBiological Laboratory, in Southern Maryland, and the Appalachian Laboratory, inthe mountains of Western Maryland.Directed by Professor Michael Roman, HPL is located on the banks of theChoptank River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland's Eastern Shore.The laboratory is interdisciplinary with faculty engaged in research on thebiology, chemistry, physics, and ecology of organisms and ecosystems fromwetlands and estuarine waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the continental shelfand open waters of the world's oceans. Areas of scientific expertise includeoceanography, plankton dynamics, marine macrophyte and wetland ecology, systemsecology, nutrient dynamics and eutrophication, physiological ecology of benthicinvertebrates, benthic-pelagic interactions, and aquaculture.
