<skos:definition xml:lang="en">The Along-Track Scanning Radiometer 2 (ATSR) on board theEuropean Remote Sensing Satellite 2 (ERS-2) produces infraredimages of the Earth at a spatial resolution of 1 kilometer. Thefirst ATSR instrument (ATSR-1) was launched on board the ERS-1satellite in July 1991 as part of the European Space Agency(ESA) Earth Observation Programme. ATSR-2 on board ESA's ERS-2spacecraft is an enhanced version of ATSR-1 and is equipped withadditional 'visible' channels for vegetation monitoring. Thedata from these instruments is useful for scientific studies ofthe land surface, atmosphere, clouds, and oceans.Additional information available at'http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov:2031/DATASET_DOCS/atsr2_gbt.html'[Summary provided by NASA]</skos:definition>
