<skos:definition xml:lang="en">The Coordinated Eastern Arctic Experiment (CEAREX) was conducted tostudy the processes regulating eastern Arctic Ocean exchange ofmomentum, heat, and biomass. The primary CEAREX objectives were tounderstand the structure and function of mesoscale and submesoscaleprocess in the transport of heat northward, and to understand the icebehavior and associated acoustic ambient noise and coherence (CEAREX,1990).CEAREX was a multi-national, multi-platform field program carried outin the Greenland and Norwegian Seas and north to Svalbard, fromSeptember 1988 through May 1989. Participating nations includedCanada, Denmark, France, Norway, and the United States. The fieldprogram consisted of four phases: Polarbjorn Drift Phase, Whaler'sBay/SIZEX Phase, Oceanography Camp Phase, and Acoustic Camp Phase.CEAREX collected data on meteorological conditions, bathymetry, hydrography, acoustic and ambient noise, sea ice dynamics(acceleration, deformation, stress), positions from GPS satellitemeasurements, and biophysical data. Data were collected using shipplatforms, ARGOS buoys, helicopter and aircraft, meteorology stationson the drifting ice, rawinsonde, CTD casts, and satellites.CEAREX was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).Reference:Pritchard, R.S., et al. 1990. 'CEAREX Drift Experiment', EOSTransactions of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Vol. 71, No. 40,October 2, 1990.Contacts:Dr. Robert S.
